The Graceville Lady Tigers, Cottondale Lady Hornets, and Marianna Lady Bulldogs softball teams all dropped their season openers Tuesday night, with GHS falling at home, and CHS and MHS on the road.
Graceville played host to the Wewahitchka Lady Gators and were routed 22-2 with several of its players still with the Lady Tigers’ basketball team.
With No. 1 pitcher Taylor McDaniel still playing basketball, the Lady Tigers gave up 17 first inning runs and 13 hits overall.
Kaylee Vaughn started and pitched the first inning and 1/3, with Caitlin Miller recording the final five outs in the three inning loss.
Graceville had just three hits as a team, with Miller, Caroline Nichols, and Sydney Graves each hitting safely, including an inside the park home run by Nichols.
Erin Rosa drove in the other run for GHS on a fielder’s choice.
The Lady Tigers will be off the rest of the week before returning to action Feb. 16 against Cottondale at home.
Cottondale fell to Holmes County 14-1 in five innings, with the Lady Blue Devils scoring three runs in the first, five in the second, and three in the third and fourth to end the game on the 10-run mercy rule.
Sara Pippin was 4 for 4 with five RBI and two runs scored to lead Holmes County, with Hannah Prescott adding three hits and two doubles.
Jenna Sellers started in the circle for Holmes County and went all five innings for the win, giving up one unearned run on five hits, one walk, and four strikeouts.
Cottondale will hit the road to take on Altha on Friday.
Marianna also went on the road Tuesday to take on 7A Chiles and came away with a 10-0 loss in five innings.
Samantha Martin started in the circle for Chiles and tossed a three hit shutout, walking just one and striking out eight.
Katie Baker was 3 for 4 with two RBI and two runs to lead the team offensively, with Martin and Erin Clenney each adding two hits.
Mallory Dean started and took the loss for the Lady Bulldogs, with Madison Gullet picking up two of Marianna’s four hits on the night.
Whitney Lipford and Mya Boykin had the other two hits for MHS.
The Lady Bulldogs will play host to Liberty County on Thursday night at 6 p.m.
