The Sneads Pirates cruised to an 89-56 victory over Tallavanna Christian on Thursday night at home on the strength of one of their best shooting performances of the season.
It was a season high in points for the Pirates, who hadn’t scored over 70 points in a game this season.
Sneads got a balanced offensive effort, with Jeremy Wert leading the way with 15 points, Devin Hayes following with 14, Troy Durant 11, Darius Williams 10, John Locke nine, and Jalon Daniels eight.
“That’s probably the best we’ve shot the ball all year long,” Pirates coach Kelvin Johnson said after the game. “Pretty much everything we shot went in the basket. It was just one of those nights where every time we were open we made the shot. We haven’t had a game like that all year long.”
Sneads posted 22 points in the first quarter and led 41-29 at the half.
The Pirates used a 25-point third period to go up 67-42 and blow the game wide open.
It was the last regular season game for the Pirates, who finish at 12-9, and was the second straight win going into next week’s district tournament.
“It was a good way to end the regular season. They’ve beaten some decent teams,” Johnson said of Tallavanna Christian. “We struggled with them over there, to come out and play like we did was very encouraging. Everybody played pretty well. We didn’t turn the ball over much.”
Sneads will next take on Altha on Tuesday in the first round of the District 3-1A tournament at 6 p.m.
The performance of Hayes in just his second game back after missing a month due to a foot injury was reason for optimism, Johnson said.
“Devin played Tuesday night and favored his foot a little bit, but he looked real good (against Tallavanna),” the coach said. “The more chance he gets to heal, the better we’ll be. We really need him next week.”
