COTTONDALE – The Marianna Middle School Bullpups moved one step closer to a perfect season Thursday night with a 34-8 victory over the Cottondale Hornets.
With the win, the Bullpups improved to 6-0 on the season, and can make it a perfect 7-0 with a win over Jefferson County on Thursday.
The Bullpups got big nights out of Herman Williams and Quattre Couch, with Williams gaining 106 yards and two touchdowns on the ground, and Couch rushing for 94 yards and a TD on just four carries.
Alex Edwards also had 85 total yards and a score.
Javontai Hall had 47 yards and a touchdown on seven carries to lead the Hornets, while Chris Hall had 43 yards on 17 tries, and Da’Michael Faulk had 23 yards on five rushes.
Marianna got on the board first after taking over on downs at the Cottondale 14-yard line midway through the first period when Williams ran it in on the very next play.
Will Smith’s 2-point play made it 8-0, and the Bullpups quickly struck again after Cottondale fumbled the ensuing kickoff.
Edwards scored from 35 yards out to give Marianna two touchdowns in just 10 seconds.
MMS quarterback Anton Williams completed a pass to Aaron Williams for the 2-point play to make it 16-0 with 4:06 left in the opening quarter.
The Bullpups added another score late in the first half when Herman Williams rushed for 28 yards to the Cottondale 2-yard line to set up his own score on the next play to make it 22-0 with 3:24 left in the half.
Marianna’s first possession of the second half started at its own 11, but the Bullpups still needed just three plays to find the end zone.
After a 32-yard run by Edwards and an incomplete pass by Anton Williams, Couch took it over the left side, cut back towards the middle of the field, and raced to the end zone from 57 yards out.
The Hornets answered with their first score of the game on their next possession, driving 83 yards on eight plays, capped by Javontai Hall’s 7-yard TD run off the left side.
The 2-point play by Faulk made it 28-8 with 7:08 left in the game.
The Bullpups put together one last scoring drive with their reserves in the game, with Tyler White ending a 12-play, 55-yard march with a 2-yard TD run with 41 seconds to play.
It was the last game of the season for Cottondale, which finishes at 1-2, while MMS will wrap up its season on Thursday at Jefferson County.
