Tyler Wilson hit his second grand slam of the year to help propel the Chipola Indians to a 12-11 victory over Shelton State on Tuesday afternoon at Chipola Field.
Wilson’s slam came in the second inning off of Shelton State starter Justin Anglin, to give Chipola a 5-1 lead.
The Indians got two more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning on a pair of RBI singles by Josh Allen and Andy Fermin.
Shelton State answered back with five runs in the fifth, and three more in the sixth, to briefly take a 9-8 lead.
Matt Kirkwood hit a two-run home run in the fifth for Shelton State. Cayleb Coker added a three-run shot later in the inning.
Shelton State scored all three runs in the sixth inning off of Chipola errors, of which the Indians had five on the day.
But Chipola responded with four runs in the bottom of the sixth to take the lead for good.
A single by Allen and a double by Fermin set the stage for a three-run homer by Eric Sauls, to put the Indians up 11-9.
An RBI single by Jonathan Gilbert scored Aaron Etchison to complete the rally.
Shelton State took advantage of two more Chipola errors to plate a run in the seventh, and another in the eighth, to get to within a run.
Duncan Midkiff, who came on in relief for the Indians in the eighth and struck out Johnny Shuttlesworth with a man on third to end the inning, came back to close it out in the ninth.
After giving up a two-out double to Dustin Dunn, Midkiff got Kirkwood to ground out to third base to end the game.
Chipola will next hit the road Thursday and Friday for a pair of games against College of Southern Nevada.
