The Marianna High School Bulldogs soccer team went on the road Monday night and picked up their fifth win of the season of the season over the Freeport Bulldogs.

The 2-1 win improved the Bulldogs’ record to 5-8-1 on the season.

Marianna had Zac Davis, Jude Han, Cody Barfield, and Enrico Mannatrizio up front in the forward spots, with Paul Gochenaur, JT Meadows, Seth Gilley, and Stevie Blanchette defending the midfield.

Defending was James Morrison and David White, with Michael Mader in the box.

It took just 10 minutes into the game before Cody Barfield picked up a goal on a straight shot by the goalkeeper, giving Marianna an early 1-0 lead.

With 17 minutes left in the half, the Freeport Bulldogs evened the game at 1-1.

With just 16 minutes left in the game, Barfield again took the ball down the right side and passed to Enrico Mannatrizio in the center, who found the back of the box for the second and final goal of the night.

On the night Mader recorded 10 saves on 19 attempts with one goal scored and eight missed shots.

Following the game, Marianna coach Garyn Waller was pleased with his team’s solid effort.

“The last game before Christmas break is always the toughest,” he said. “With high school kids you never know if their mind is more on the game. But we seemed to have our minds in the right place and came out with a win.

Freeport has one of the better players in this area and JT did a good job of containing him. When he did get loose, our defense did a good job of helping out. We took advantage o f two nicely played through balls for both of our scores. We still missed several scoring opportunities, but we capitalized on enough to get the win.”

Marianna will be off until Jan. 7 when it travels to Walton to take on the Braves for the first of three straight district games.

“I just hope the guys can be accountable enough on their own to get out and run some and touch a soccer ball while on their break,” Waller said.
