With county elections on the horizon this August, the political season is getting under way.
District 2 Jackson County Commission candidate Clint Pate, a Republican, brought his message to members of his party Tuesday as the the Republican Club of West Florida met for lunch.
Pate gave a summary of his career.
The Graceville resident said he though his experience in a variety of vocational endeavors would help him meet the needs of the county and to advocate for District 2, where the incumbent on the commission is Edward Crutchfield.
Pate holds an agri-science degree and has worked in the field. He also works with the FFA and other youth groups.
He now works in road design for GPI, an engineering firm with an office in Marianna.
He said he is also a “precinct man” in Graceville for the Jackson County Republican Committee.
Fellow Republicans at the meeting said they’re working hard toward the goal of helping elect “the first Republican county commissioner” this year. Many volunteered on the spot to help Pate as he develops his campaign platform.
When asked what his plans are, Pate gave no specifics, saying that’s still a work in progress.
He hinted, however, at some of the issues on which he feels he can have an impact, including road decisions.
Pate plans to qualify by the petition method, and is seeking signatures to get on the ballot.
Also appearing at the luncheon meeting was Jim Cowart, who had planned to run against incumbent Jeremy Branch for the County Commission District 4 seat.
Cowart notified his party before Tuesday’s lunch that he was withdrawing from the race, however.
Branch and Pate are the only two candidates thus far to announce their intentions with the Supervisor of Elections.
In addition to the District 2 and 4 county commission seats, the school board has three positions up for election this year.
