A two-day event Sept. 25-26 celebrates “Marianna Day,” which marks the Civil War’s Battle of Marianna fought in late September 1864.
A ceremony will take place at the Confederate Monument in Confederate Park, located in downtown Mariana between Lafayette Street and Constitution Lane. The ceremony begins at 9 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 26, and honors the 10 local men who died in the battle.
Ten local living residents, representing the fallen men, will be dressed in period costume and, in character, will talk about how the person they are representing died.
Following the ceremony in Confederate Park, St. Luke’s Church opens its doors at 9:30 a.m. for a rare viewing of the Bible that survived a Civil War skirmish at the church. St. Luke’s will also open for tours at noon, following two more big festival events that day.
The first is a Marianna Day parade, which commences at 10 a.m.on Lafayette Street. At 11 a.m., the Battle of Marianna will be re-enacted on Lafayette Street. Main Street Marianna is looking to book more parade participants and can be reached at 482-2786.
At noon, action picks up at Citizens Lodge Park on Caverns Road. Living history camps will be set up there until 5 p.m., and area bluegrass performers will provide live music throughout the day. Arts and crafts exhibits and other vendors will be set up on the grounds. The festival shuts down at 9 p.m. and musicians will be playing throughout the day.
The first day of the festival, on Friday, Sept. 25, will feature living history stations at Citizens Lodge during the morning. Action picks up at Citizens Lodge at 1 p.m. with living campgrounds and music. Arts and crafts and other vendors will fill out the field.
