The Chipola Lady Indians went 2-1 at the Florida JUCO Jamboree in Tallahassee Saturday.

However, that wasn’t enough to satisfy Chipola coach David Lane, who classified his team’s performance Saturday as “not very good.”

The Lady Indians won a sloppy game over FCCJ in their first game, then lost to South Georgia Tech in their second.

“We just didn’t play very well,” Lane said of the loss.

The Lady Indians dropped the game to a South Georgia Tech team Chipola defeated in a jamboree in Columbus, Ga. Aug. 10.

“We were sloppy, and they’re very, very athletic. When we played them the first time, they were playing four games that day and we were playing three, so we were able to take advantage of that,” he said. “This time, we turned the ball over, missed seven or eight free throws, and just didn’t play that well.”

Chipola finished the day with an overtime win over Daytona Beach.

The jamboree rules dictated that the first team to score in overtime won, with Daytona Beach missing two free throws to start OT before the Lady Indians made
1-of-2 to win.

“We really weren’t very good. We turned the ball over and got very sloppy,” Lane said of his team. “I don’t know if we thought because of the games we won two weeks ago that we had it taken care of, but we never had much urgency or desire to learn from our mistakes. That was the frustrating part of it.”

Lane said he has been looking for more energy and focus from his team for a few weeks now, but he’s not finding it as often as he would like.

“We’re not really showing it on a consistent basis,” the coach said. “The week leading up to (the jamboree), it got a little bit better on Thursday and Friday. But you’re not going to be able to fix everything in a day. It’s just disappointing.”

Lane said the biggest problem for his team on the court right now is its inability to rebound at a high level.

It’s not a new issue for his team, but Lane said he’d like to see more progress.

“Rebounding was a big thing, and that was what was most disappointing,” the coach said. “We had concentrated our effort on getting better rebounding and we still aren’t.

“This is the problem. We’re talking to people about getting better and we’re not doing it. That’s the frustrating part right now. We don’t seem to have that urgency to get better at the rate we need to get better at.”
