Hornets, Tigers split two games

The Cottondale Middle School Hornets basketball team took their game on the road to Graceville Tuesday and walked away with a split.

The “B” team fell 25-23, but the “A” team picked up a 31-11 victory over the Tigers.

In “A” team action, Cottondale held Graceville to just two first quarter points to take an 8-2 lead into the second period.

Graceville bounced back to outscore the Hornets 7-5 to narrow the Hornet lead to 13-9 at the half. In the third quarter, it was again all Hornets with Cottondale putting up eight points to Graceville’s two to lead 21-11 going into the final period.

For Cottondale, it was Brian Slesser leading with nine points and 11 rebounds, followed by Dakota Chambliss with five points and eight rebounds.

In “B” team action, it was the Hornets taking a 4-3 lead after one quarter before each team put up nine second quarter points to give Cottondale a 13-12 margin at the half.

The tables turned in the third quarter with Graceville outscoring Cottondale by two points to take a 17-16 lead into the final quarter of play.

The Tigers held on for the two-point victory.

Leading the Hornets in scoring was Jalan Johnson with 11 points, followed by Kadeem Webb with eight points.

Stats were not available for the Graceville Tigers.

Cottondale will travel to Marianna on Thursday with tip offs at 5 p.m. and 6 p.m.
