By 35 votes, Marianna Mayor James Wise was re-elected to the Marianna City Commission Tuesday, based on unofficial results for the city’s election.
“Thank you. I’m disappointed by the turn out, but I’m very appreciative of the voters that voted,” Wise said after the results were posted.
Of the 714 residents registered to vote in Marianna, a total of 75 ballots were cast, meaning 10.5 percent of the city’s registered voters turned out.
Wise was opposed by former commissioner Dr. Richard Brunner. According to unofficial results, Brunner received a total of 20 votes, and Wise received 55.
Born and raised in Bascom, Wise has served more than 15 years on the city commission.
“You need to be proud of your town,” Wise said in a previous interview. “You need to be proud of where you live. If you don’t think you can be proud, get involved and try to do something about it ... I can truly say that every decision I have made has been strictly for the benefit of the city and it’s residents. I have no selfish motive, no agenda. I just want to serve.”

Well like my daddy used to say the people have spoke but its a mighty few people in a town the size of Marianna. Folks out to be ashamed not to go out and vote. 75 votes and little Grand Ridge had 199 voters show up to vote. Like the candidates or not, you got to vote. Couldn’t have had two worse candidates than McGovern and Nixon and folks voted for them. Tricky Dick proved to be the scum I thought but he went down a hero but at least I got my vote. I was one of the 199 in Grand Ridge and my sister was one of the 75 in Marianna so where were the rest of you.
