DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Gov. Charlie Crist has suspended the mayor of a South Florida city from public office.

Crist issued an executive order Monday prohibiting Albert Capellini from working as the mayor of Deerfield Beach.

Capellini is a four-term mayor. The state attorney’s office charged him Friday with unlawful compensation after voting on projects when he was also a paid engineering consultant. Capellini was arrested and released on bail.

Capellini’s attorney, J. David Bogenschutz, says the governor’s order was expected and the mayor will fight the charges.

Sylvia Poitier will succeed Capellini as mayor.
