A few glimmers appear

Despite the continuing gloom on the economic front, there may be a few glimmers that, at least locally, things might be about to improve.
For starters, Jackson County’s unemployment rate has been falling steadily, from 7.7 percent in July to 7.2 percent in September.
Then there is Country Crossing, which has already begun to hire as construction continues. The project will create hundreds of jobs just across the state line, and a relatively short commute for those who live north of the Interstate.
Now comes word that Southwest will be flying in to Panama City, once the new airport there is complete. The decision by a major air carrier means other, larger domestic carriers may also consider flying here.
Aside from the convenience this will pose for local air travelers, major airports tend to create jobs. Not so much at the airport itself, but by creating transportation links for things like air cargo and air shipping that companies will take advantage of – perhaps even to the point of relocating from somewhere else to this area.
Anyone who has driven down SR 71 towards the interstate has noticed the new building going up behind the bank. A major restaurant chain will be opening a restaurant there, and it is an indication that that area in particular remains attractive to retailers.
There are other examples. For instance, the hospital up in Graceville is expanding.
It’s certainly not time to declare the recession over, not even locally. But it may be a sign that a corner is being turned.
