Time to shed some light

Elected officials across Jackson County have been having a hard time of it lately. Consumers of electricity — that is to say, just about everybody, or at least everybody who votes — have been up in arms about the latest increases in their bills. About the only things missing have been the torches and pitchforks.

A welcome addition

The weather may not have cooperated fully, but kudos to Mainstreet Marianna and the Artist Guild of Northwest Florida for a good first effort with their Jazzy Day in Town Saturday.

Pastor calls for action on light bills

This is an open letter to our elected Jackson County and state representatives and to Florida Public Utilities. You, our public utility company, continue to make it very difficult for those living at or below poverty level to live. As your receptionist said, “that is just the way it is.”

Eminent domain use is a concern

Never before have I been more concerned for the well-being of our country and community, due to the way some of our elected officials, both local and national, are utilizing their authority as representatives of the people. No wonder our country is in its present condition.

School board should rethink priorities

I attended the Jackson County School Board workshop Jan. 11, and I would first like to comment on the reception I incurred by half of the Jackson County School Board elected officials — it was very cold.

Don’t rush to judge

A poor decision

It is a pity Jackson County didn’t get the German solar panel plant. It’s also a pity the Jackson County Development Council chose to call a press conference the way it did.

Plan to move Sneads students is a bad one

On Jan, 21, Lee Miller, Jackson County School Board superintendent, held a “town hall meeting” with the parents of children from Sneads Elementary School. Per Mr. Miller, the premise of the meeting was to open the floor up for “any questions or comments.”

Church happy that vandalism has ceased

We would like to say thank you to Sheriff Lou Roberts and Lt. Jamie Burch.

Do unto others

We hope residents of Jackson County have responded to the many appeals being made to assist the people of Haiti. If you haven’t contributed something — food, clothes or money — we urge you to do so.

State took too long to act

First, I thank God for giving me the courage and strength to write this letter. Second, I thank the people of Jackson County and the surrounding area for their support during my daughter’s traumatic accident March 5, 2008.

Hope School hosted our first basketball tournament on Dec. 10 at Grand Ridge School. Many people and much community support helped make this possible, and I would like to officially thank each one who contributed to our first and very successful tournament.

Murder sentence was a disappointment

I write this letter in response to those who have spoken to me about my previous letter to the editor, written about Judge William Wright’s ruling with regard to the death penalty for Wesley John Williams. All responses, thus far, have been positive.

County needs to tell us the cost

This letter will address two separate topics that I read about in the Dec. 9 edition of the Jackson County Floridan. I have been monitoring both situations and am interested in their outcomes.

Nursing home patients have rights

JCFR ambulance crews are pros

I want to thank the members of the Jackson County Fire Rescue ambulance for their quick response and kind treatment of my father, father-in-law and mother-in-law.

Residents should keep county clean

One of the first things we learn as children is to clean up after ourselves. Unfortunately, it seems far too many residents in Marianna and Jackson County have forgotten this basic lesson.
