Former Sneads High School teacher Tommy Stoutamire pleaded guilty Tuesday to multiple charges related to offenses against four of his female students, accepting a deal that will put him behind bars for just under a year.
Stoutamire pleaded guilty to four counts of child abuse, two counts of false imprisonment, one count of battery, and three counts of lewd and lascivious molestation in the case.

All the incidents cited in court occurred in 2007, according to court officials. Stoutamire was teaching agriculture at SHS when the case investigation began in May of last year. He also sponsored the school’s FFA and had 25 years of experience as a teacher. He resigned his post shortly after the investigation began.
Stoutamire, who lives in Liberty County, was sentenced to serve 11 months and 29 days in the Liberty County jail. He will be on probation for an additional 14 years under the terms of the plea agreement.
He will be required to give up his teaching certificate/license, and never seek employment in the field again, according to the terms of the plea.
Stoutamire wrote a letter apologizing to the girls as part of the deal.
Although they were named in his letter, which was addressed to prosecutor Heather Lane, only their initials will be used here because they are all juveniles.
“I want to express my sincere apologies to CM, KB, MY and LH,” his letter reads. “Each of these young ladies have suffered this past year in school and in the community and have done nothing to deserve the treatment. I accept responsibility for my actions and for the hurt the actions have caused not only to these four ladies but the Sneads community as well. I urge all involved to allow these girls to attend school in peace and understand they have done nothing wrong. It is with great regret I move forward with my life today. I understand and accept the punishment of the Court and I will work to earn the trust of my family, friends, loved ones yet again.”
He was sentenced as a sex offender, and must comply with a number of requirements related to that status.
David York, the father of one victim, said he had at first wanted to see Stoutamire sent to prison rather than a county jail, but that after more than a year of dealing with the trauma, the family finally decided to accept the plea in order to get on with their lives. Some of the offenses carried possible penalties of up to 15 years in prison.
York said he expects to seek civil relief in the case, both against Stoutamire individually and against the school system.
He and wife Margie, the victim’s mother, have retained lawyer Chris Young to handle their civil cases.
In court Tuesday prior to sentencing, Margie York read from a written statement addressed to Stoutamire.
“It is so hard for me to stand here and be calm after what you did to my daughter,” she said. “There are no words to express what we have suffered this past year because of your actions. You know, this letter of apology you are giving my daughter today could have been written a year ago and even though it would not have taken away what you did, maybe it would have stopped some of the harassment she has had to endure this past school year from not only classmates, but from teachers as well. All because she stood up and told the truth. But when I become overwhelmed by the anger and hurt, I remember that my Lord will always have the last word, he is the Beginning and the End. Even though I do not have the resources to get myself out of this problem, I know He will deliver me. I pray that you can make peace with God for your actions.”
Stoutamire was fingerprinted at the close of the court proceeding and taken into custody immediately. His lawyer had asked Circuit Judge Bill Wright to give his client two weeks to clear up personal matters and undergo a medical procedure before starting his sentence, but Wright declined.

Like I said I’m not going to keep arguing because no one here is going to change their mind and it doesn’t matter if they do anyway. The Sneads girls and people that matter know the real Stout. We know what all he’s done for us and what he has not done to us. So have your opinion, whatever. We’re all entitled to it. You’re right though, it is enough to get blood boiling when I know those girls have told people that it really wasn’t true! This isn’t just coming from the grapevine either, I have a lot of close friends who attend Sneads and whose children attend Sneads. It’s okay though, you can try to make him look bad to inmates or whatever, but the Lord knows the truth, and so does everyone who knows Stout…and everyone who knows those girls…
To mommy2furbabies. So before you knocking on someone trying to make them look stupid you are only making yourself look stupid thinking that this sick minded individual could be so innocent. And 80cj7 probaly missed spelled “hero’s” because of how she feels about this situation. It is enough to get anyone’s blood boiling. And ya know what if it were my father or bother I wouldn’t feel the least bit soory for them at all they would deserve everything they got and some to mess with CHILDREN!!!!! Mr. Stoutamire didn’t get half of the punishment and sentenced that he deserves. But I tell ya what let those inmates at Liberty County Jail find out what he is in there for, I can promise you that it will be the longest year of his life and the ABSOLUTELY the MOST HELLACIOUS ONE!!!! ![]()
Okayy I am no longer commenting on this because it is pointless to argue with strangers about something they have no clue about except for what they’ve read [no personal experience.] I do have to say though—you said what if it was my daughter—well what if it was your father, or brother? Think about that. Nice chatting with ya.
He “admitted” because there is no way a court would believe one man over four girls! One of those girls are on MY MySpace and she has made comments to other kids that it never happened! She was just pressured to say it! So believe what the article says if you want to I don’t care. Also, my education worked out just fine! Doesn’t look like yours did though. Look at your grammar…“hero’s?“ Okayy…whatever. Sneads High is an A school, haven’t you read? Sneads High sent me to college where I graduated with honors. Another thing - I would leave my kids with Stout ANY day. I trust how he was with me and my classmates, not what some little girls no one even knew until now said. Thanks for your time =]
Excuse me but if he didn’t do it then why did he plea GUILTY?!?!?! These four girls are liars, one is my little sister and she wouldn’t NEVER lie about something like this and it wasn’t like these four girls were in a “click” or even direct friends, they didn’t get together and plot this out! HE IS GUILTY!!!!
your education at your beloved sneads didn’t work out to well did it? He admitted his guilt which is stated in the letter and in his plea. People like you are the reason sex offenders get away with it. If it were your child I bet your views would change. and your comments only hurt these girls even more.
Boy I am glad my child does not attend school, makes me glad we home school.
One year in jail????? That’s it? But yet people driving on suspended D.L.‘s and all the other petty B.S. tends to get a longer sentence than this, come on now. I hope that people in that jail finds out and nows exactly what he is in there for better yet I will make sure of it!!! Word has it that people in jail for chils related crimes especially “Sexual” related crimes has a tougher time doing their sentence than just the little petty crap!!!!!
I will not be praying for or thanking ANY of these girls. Heroes? Are you serious? I will be praying for MR. STOUTAMIRE, laid up in a jail cell for the next year because of lies, as well as his family! If Mr. Stoutamire wanted to do anything that would’ve resulted in these charges, he would’ve done so a long time ago! I was a student at Sneads High School and I adored him just as the rest of the school did. Stoutamire was always around a lot of us young girls and NEVER was he inappropriate with ANY of us! I doubt you know anything about any of the people involved anyway so I don’t know why I’m wasting my time on responding. All I have to say is I don’t and NEVER WILL believe four little troublemaker girls over Mr. Stoutamire and his REAL [FFA] girls! They know he isn’t what they say he is, along with all his other students. We love you Mr. Stoutamire!
These four girls have been mistreated, shunned and talked about for over a year since this incident happened. What most people don’t understand is that these young ladies should be considered hero’s to this county. In our current society it is so easy to tell a lie and not face the truth, these four stood up for what is right. As people look at this situation and try to understand what has happened and make sense of this. you should thank these 4 hero’s for there courage to make a stand. If you have a daughter in our school system
and you think about what would have happened if these four had not of done this and what the headlines could have read this year or next year you should pray for these girls and thank them for being honest people,
