Sneads auxiliary invites veterans to free meal
Published: October 28, 2009
The American Legion Auxiliary in Sneads, Unit 241, will honor area veterans and their spouses with a home-cooked luncheon on Saturday, Nov. 7 at the post on Legion Road. The lunch will be served from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m.
Veterans who aren’t married are invited to bring one guest, as well.
Eula Mae Segrest, one of the event’s organizers, is asking all who plan to attend to make a reservation by Nov. 3 so the cooking crew can prepare the appropriate amount of food.
Ham, green beans, potato salad, pound cake, pickles and tomatoes are on the menu, along with beverages.
All the cooks are members of the auxiliary, and the veterans of American Legion Post 241 are assisting with the event. But, truth be told, it’s the women who are the driving force behind the event.
“There’s about 20 pound cakes being baked,” Segrest said. “Anybody can go out and buy stuff, but it takes the personal touch when it comes to really putting the love and heart into doing something for the veterans who have done something for this country. It’s something to do from our heart, and something that we love to do.”
Unit 241 fed more than 130 people in 2007, the last time the event was held.
“It’s a big undertaking, but it’s something we want to do,” Segrest said. “We only ask for reservations because we want to make sure we cook enough for everyone to enjoy a great meal. We’ve got a lot of people working on this and I think it’s going to turn out real good.”
There is no charge for the meal, and each veteran will receive a gift bag. Door prizes will also be given away.
