An alleged incident of battery involving a Graceville Elementary School teacher is under investigation by the Graceville Police Department, the Department of Children and Families and Jackson County School District officials.
According to the mother of the Graceville student, her son’s arm was bruised and sprained by a teacher at the school earlier this week.
His arm is now in a sling prescribed by the emergency room doctor, she said.
The incident is still under investigation, and charges had not been filed against the teacher as of Thursday,  according to the school district and the police department.
The Floridan is not publishing the identity of those involved because no charges have been filed.
The mother of the student alleged her son fell asleep at his desk, when the teacher attempted to wake him by grabbing his arm. After he woke, she proceeded to pull him up by his arm and twist it as he attempted to pull his arm away, the mother claimed.
She said the teacher continued to pull him from his desk by his arm while he complained that it hurt.
Her son wasn’t allowed by that teacher to visit the school nurse, the mother said, adding that once he was back in his homeroom class, his home room teacher allowed him to visit the nurse.
The mother alleged that the principal of the school was involved in an investigation of the incident on the day it happened, but no one from the school contacted the boy’s parents regarding it.
Under the recommendation of a doctor, the boy was taken to an emergency room and his arm was X-rayed, the mother said.
She said she has medical records from the hospital visit that prove her son’s arm had a contusion and sprain, and that a sling was prescribed.
The district said it is looking into the report.
“We take anything like that very seriously. At this point, we don’t feel anything is founded,”  Moore said.
Moore said he didn’t know when the investigation would be completed.
“We’d like to clear up anything like this as clear as possible,” Moore said.
The teacher has not been suspended, Moore said, and the student is no longer in her classroom.
