Marianna Police Chief Hayes Baggett Tuesday disclosed the name of the police officer who fatally shot Marianna resident Mark Anthony Daniels earlier this month.
Baggett said in a news release that canine officer Bliss Moreau remains on paid administrative leave, but will return to duty after he is medically cleared to do so.
Baggett hired Moreau in January of this year. According to city officials, Moreau attended Chipola College and graduated in 2003.
He passed his state law enforcement exam in 2004, and was employed at the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office before joing the Marianna Police Department.
Meanwhile, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement continues to investigate the incident which led to Daniels’ death.
The medical examiner a few weeks ago determined that Daniels, 31, died as the result of a single gunshot wound to the torso.
According to previous press releases about the case, an officer was pursuing Daniels on Penn Avenue around 7:15 p.m. Sept. 4, and tried to pull him over for speeding.
According to FDLE, the Chevy suburban driven by Daniels was eventually blocked on Oak Street by a responding officer’s patrol car. As Marianna police officers approached the Suburban, officials said, Daniels accelerated and struck a patrol car.
Moreau then fired his weapon at the Chevy, striking Daniels.
The Suburban continued for several blocks before striking a power pole at the intersection of Orange and South streets.
Daniels was transported to Jackson Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
