Marianna man charged with assault

A Marianna man’s misplaced anger landed him in jail Monday, according to Cottondale Police Chief William Watford.

Henry Pope, 49, of Marianna went to Branning’s Garage under the impression that the company had towed a vehicle that belonged to him or a friend, Watford said.

He then allegedly started making threatening remarks and pulled up his shirt to expose a handgun that he had wedged between his back and his trousers, according to Watford.

A staffer at the business called 911 and a Cottondale police officer was dispatched to the scene. Watford soon followed and arrested Pope without further incident. Watford said Pope had a Ruger .357 single-shot handgun on his person.  He was charged with aggravated assault with a firearm and carrying a concealed weapon.

As it turned out, Branning hadn’t towed the vehicle and knew nothing about it, Watford said.
Pope was released Tuesday on a $1,500 bond and a conditional release.
