Deputies with the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office got new first aid kits for their cruisers this week, thanks in part to the assistance of Jackson Hospital.
The hospital’s emergency room crew put the kits together and the hospital donated bags to carry the materials. The sheriff’s office paid $1,300 for the first aid supplies, and will get new supplies free of charge from the hospital.
The officers will also be trained in the best use of the kits at no cost, Jackson County Sheriff Lou Roberts said.
Roberts said it would have cost more than $5,000 to buy new kits commercially.
“We’d looked at replacing our old kits, and it would have cost at least $75 each, and we felt that was cost prohibitive. In addition to that, the kits we were seeing had a lot of stuff we’d just never use.” he said. “As an alternative, we consulted Jackson Hospital about what we could put together ourselves as a practical first aid kit. They called us back and said they were going to do this for us. The bags have the hospital logo, and we reimbursed them for the first supplies. As they run out, the deputies can just go in and get replacement supplies at no cost.”
Roberts said the agreement works out well for his deputies and the sheriff’s office.
“It was a generous offer, a great partnership that allows us to get what we need at a significant savings, and of course the training’s the thing. That was an important plus,” the sheriff said.
The training, he said, will likely commence after the Thanksgiving holidays.
