Marianna man dies several days after arrest attempt involving Taser

A 27-year-old Marianna man died early Friday morning more than a week after Houston County Sheriff’s deputies used a Taser on him during an arrest attempt.

Deputies used a Taser on Nicholas Cody after he fled from sheriff’s deputies on June 15 during a traffic stop on U.S. 231 South. Cody apparently failed to comply with the officer. After Cody was struck with the Taser the third time he appeared to have a seizure, sheriff’s officials previously said.

Cody was taken to the hospital after the incident, and sheriff’s officials had said he suffered serious injuries.

Cody died during the early morning hours Friday at the intensive care unit at Southeast Alabama Medical Center, said Houston County Coroner Robert Byrd. An autopsy will be performed at the Alabama Department Forensic Science to determine the cause of death.

Sheriff Andy Hughes said he didn’t believe the Taser had an influence on Cody’s death. Hughes previously asked the Alabama Bureau of Investigation to look into the incident.
