TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Florida kindergarten pupils have turned in the best overall results yet on screening tests in the four years since they began.

The kindergartners improved this year on two of three tests and dropped only a fraction of a percentage point on the third, state education officials said Monday.

On alphabet recognition, 76.6 percent were deemed above average and low risk, almost 5 percentage points better than last year.

The rate was 67.9 percent for sound recognition, up more than three percentage points.

On classroom readiness, 47.6 percent demonstrated grade level learning development, down four-tenths of a percentage point.
