School Board votes, ‘CHANGE’  teacher stays

A large crowd of people walked out of the Jackson County School Board office in Marianna disappointed by the board’s decision to uphold disciplinary actions against former Marianna Middle School teacher Greg Howard.
Many concerned citizens   spoke before the board at the meeting, calling for the termination of Howard’s employment.
Similar sentiments have been expressed to the school board and Superintendent Danny Sims since Howard explained to multiple seventh-grade classes two weeks ago that an acronym spelling out the word “change” included a racial expletive that begins with N.
Since the incident, Howard was placed on 10 days suspension without pay, removed from a football coaching position and transferred to a position at the Jackson County Adult Education program.
According to JCSB records, Howard began teaching at the Jackson County Adult Education program Thursday.
Howard, who has been a teacher for more than 20 years, was also required to write a letter of apology to the students that were involved, as well as attend diversity/sensitivity training.
Sims brought a recommendation before the board Thursday to stand by these disciplinary actions and not take any further action against Howard.
School board attorney Frank Bondurant explained to the board that, in the state of Florida, school boards are restricted from over-riding a superintendent’s recommendation with a more severe disciplinary action against on employee.
Bondurant said that the board could only oppose Sims’ recommendation with a less severe disciplinary plan.
If the board were to oppose Sims’ recommendation, Bondurant said, then Sims would have to place Howard back on a paid suspension until the matter was resolved.
After Bondurant’s explanation, the board voted 3 to 2, approving Sim’s recommendation.
Dr. Terry Nichols, Betty Duffee and Chris Johnson voted for the recommendation, while Charlotte Gardner and Kenny Griffin voted against it.
A number of people turned out for the school board meeting, including Tallahassee-based attorney Benjamin Crump, who was one of many who urged the board to terminate Howard’s employment.
After the meeting, Crump said he was surprised by the results.
“I actually was telling people not to worry, that surely they would have the sense to handle this correctly,” said Crump. “Now it will have to go into the court room.”
Rev. Riley Henderson also spoke before the board, and claimed that the racial slur incident was just one of many incidents in which Howard subjected his students to offensive remarks.
Cephus Granberry, a school district employee, spoke to the board as the father of a student in Howard’s class.
Granberry said his daughter was not present for the incident that made headlines, but was involved in another incident with Howard, in which the teacher allegedly called Granberry’s daughter and two other students idiots.
“Since then, every day she comes home and she is not the same,” said Granberry. “Not only has the ‘Change’ changed children but other statements that Mr. Howard has made has caused good children, good children, to change. It’s not right.”
Sims insisted that the school board performed a thorough investigation on Howard and found no history of this nature.
One citizen spoke on behalf of Howard, and that was James Howard.
“I’m not gonna take anybody to church and extemporary teaching isn’t my forte, but I’d just like to say that we’ve heard a lot of comments about the situation at hand. Many of the people have, I think, blown this way our of proportion,” said James Howard.
“I know Greg Howard.  I know him very well. And I understand from talking to him that he was trying to take a situation that was in his classroom and actually make a teaching moment out of that situation. He had the audacity to be a teacher ... This has been blown way out of proportion.”

Another thing, Maybe they should drug test him.  It seems like most of the town especially the 35-45 year old crowd are all hooked on crystal meth.  I was recently in Marianna and they were smoking it out in the open like it was legal.  Marianna used to be a small, nice town 20 years ago but, now it is drug infested and everyone seems to have a meth problem.  I have relatives in that town and they all have a problem with this drug.  It is horrible.  Everyone was fat and unhealthy and all hooked.  Marianna has a big problem and it needs to be addressed soon.  Drug test him.

Hello!!!!Danny Sims is Greg Howards wife’s first cousin.  Has everyone forgot that.  In fact Greg Howard and his wife Jeanine are like second cousins.  What does that tell you?  This is the reason he did not get fired.  The Sims clan are all cousins.
Everytime a Sims is arrested (like Chuck Sims) recently it seems to mysteriously go away.  No one else will say it so I will.  Cousin Mark Mr. prosecuter probably helped also.  They should of moved it to another county.

OK, let’s put Mr. Howard in a closed room with the Rev.(used loosley) Wright. Then Mr. Howard might know what racism is. I’m sure that the rev. Wright could explain it very clearly. That should teach Mr. Howard a lesson he soom would not forget.

gunslinger91, you are someone who seems sincerely interested in the defeat of racism for the betterment of all involved, I have assumed by the context of your posts. Using adjectives like cowardly racists, infestations, immoral, hatred, sinister, and gutless.  Powerful motivating stuff there.  My request to you is to browse on over to the page where Mrs. Judy Mount, a democratic leader, used words and phrases like “you people” and “white and male” intentionally to spark hurt and anger and be the first to post about that injustice.  You see equality can be demanded by both sides and is to be expected by all rightfully so. Click on over there and express the widespread vitriol associated with the racism and sexism of those statements made by a prominent party leader (a 2/2).  Your sincere desire to protect the innocent, defend the victimized, and to have this all end in the right way (or the Wright way) is adequately summarized by your own quote: “Hopefully, Howard will slip up and spit some more of his racist comments in front of adults who will teach him how less of a man he is.“  I hope that if his intentions were hurtful in his misdeed that he has learned a life lesson from it.  If they were as simple as clarifying a joke then maybe he’ll tell kids what a lot more teachers should, “Go home and ask Mom and Dad.“  You seem bent on him being physically accosted.  Hmm.  By the way, it is to teach him how little of a man he is not how “less”.  I learned that in 7th grade English in Jackson County Schools.

The cowardly racists who defend Howard, are obviously like minded.  Continue to post here as you prove the kind of people that infest the Marianna area.  You are proof of the immorality, lack of decency, and utter hatred that consumes most of you.  Thank God, there are good, decent people to counter your sinister ways.  Howard should have been fired on the spot.  He will be eventually.  Danny Sims is gutless and lacks leadership ability.  The schoolboard is plain shameful and disgusting.  Those of you posting support for Howard the criminal exemplify the low class and standards so plentiful in Marianna.  The up-coming protests and lawsuits will put this little dump town in the spotlight, for all to see the filth of humanity that is cleverly disguised.  Hopefully, Howard will slip up and spit some more of his racist comments in front of adults who will teach him how less of a man he is.

Forgive me but I must comment on a couple of things here.  First gunslinger91, instead of inciting undirected riotous activity why dont you lead the movement locally to achieve equality?  Are you going to take on the role of a leader to bring about the change you see as necessary?  I doubt it.  If you will I will support you.  If you wont dont bother to reply.

Secondly to concernedparent please check your vocabulary and dont use words that or shouldn’t exist.  there is no such thing as reverse discrimination / racism.  That implies that only one group of people (whites) can be discriminatory or racist.  That is liberal indoctrination that targets white people and makes us the center of the universe and the source of all sin.  A mentality that has all but destroyed this country.  A very good friend of mine (black, dare I say it) told me as we discussed this issue that the largest reason we have such a divide today is because of the people of his race who believe that whites owe them something and refuse to integrate into the American culture or believe that after all these generations that whites still owe them anything.

I cannot speak for HIS beliefs but this page had some interesting views about the Mormon belief in general.

Superintendent Sims is a Mormon. Ask him if Mormons believe blacks are descended from Cain and are cursed with a black skin as a mark from God?
