A number of local firefighters like to ride motorcycles in their private time, and recently found a way to ride and do something good for others.
They formed a local chapter, or station, of the national Fire and Iron Firefighters Motorcycle Club. There are 22 members of Station 202, including four from Calhoun County. The rest hail from Jackson County, and either work for or support the fire services of Jackson County or Marianna.
Last weekend, they raised $775 to benefit the family of a five-year-old Sneads boy who was injured when a horse kicked him in the face several weeks ago.
Back in August, they raised money for a woman stricken with cancer.
And, they have a big event coming up on Nov. 21.
Named for a beloved former chief of Jackson County Fire Rescue who recently died of bone cancer, the First Robby Brown Memorial Charity Event is set to begin at 8 a.m. that day with a charity bike ride. Entry is $20 to ride.
The bike/car show will be held in the Marianna Winn Dixie parking lot. Organizers plan to make it an annual event.
At the same time, a bike and car show will be going on, with entry in the display also at a cost of $20.
A meal ticket is included in the price for participants in each event. The bike and car show will be a judged event, with trophies awarded at 1 p.m.
Proceeds will benefit Brown’s family, as well as local cancer victims Amber Snell and Brandi Purvis.
There is no cost to spectators, but donations will be welcome.
