Marianna’s Dixie Softball Angels sailed to a 10-3 victory over the Sneads Angels Monday night at Optimist Park, to take a 1-0 lead in district action.

Marianna sent Baylee Childs to the mound. She went four innings, giving up no runs, one hit and two walks while striking out nine batters. Sydnee Goodson came on in relief for the last inning, giving up three runs on four walks and two hits while striking out two.

Sneads’ Casey Grover went two innings, giving up no runs, with no hits allowed, one walk and striking out five. Autumn Avriette came on for two innings, giving up five runs on three hits, three errors and one walk . Kaylee Cain closed out the game, giving up five runs on three hits, four walks and one hit batter.

Grover struck out the top of the Marianna order in the first inning. For Sneads, Childs worked out of a lead off double by striking out the next two batters, before inducing a ground out to second to end the inning with no runs scored.

Childs drew a one-out walk in the top of the second inning, but a strike out and a ground out followed to end the inning with Marianna not plating a run. Childs retired the side on strikeouts in the bottom half of the second.

Marianna plated five runs in the third inning. Konnor Johnson got things going with a walk, before an error at second had Allyson Cannady safe at first, putting runners on the corners for Selena Ubias to pick up an RBI when she reached on a bobbled ball. Amy Gerehart cleared the bases with a homerun. With two outs, Valerie Sims reached on a walk and stole to third, before scoring on a sacrifice by Goodson. A strikeout ended the inning.

In the bottom of the inning, a lead off walk to Bree-Anna Davis went for nil as Childs fanned the next three batters.

In the top of the fourth inning, Bonnie Bigale led off with a double, but was out on a double play. Carlee Wilson tried to turn a triple into a homerun and was out at the plate to end the inning.

In the bottom half of the frame, one-out walks to Cain and Avriette proved fruitless as Childs retired the next two batters.

In the top of the fifth inning, Marianna added five runs. Walks to Kayleigh Bruner and Konnor Johnson were followed by an RBI single by Cannady. Ubias took one for the team and Gerehart followed with an RBI walk. Carter singled home a run, with Sims doubling to score the final runs of the game for Marianna. Walks to Goodson and Bigale produced no runs.

Sneads’ rally in the bottom half of the inning fell short, with only three runs crossing the plate. With one out, Lyndsey Poole drew a walk and following a ground out, Davis reached on a walk to put runners on the corners. A single by Varn scored two runs, with Goodson singling home the final run of the game.

With the win, Marianna will play again on Wednesday while Sneads was scheduled to take the field at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday. Results of that game were not available at press time.

The headline doesn’t fit the score.
