School board approves added mill levy
Published: July 2, 2009
Jackson County School Board voted unanimously Wednesday to sign a resolution of intent to levy an additional .25 mills in the next fiscal year.
The final adoption process will take place later this year.
The levy would, on its own, generate only about $378,667 because of this county’s relatively low property tax base.
But because it is a special levy that comes with an adjustment from the state to bring the levy’s impact up to state average, it would bring in an additional $655,552 in total.
The roughly $1 million in added revenue would help the school board erase more than half the $1.6 million shortfall it anticipates in the general operating fund next year.
Although the school board has reserves to cover the expected shortfall, the levy allows the school board to use less of its reserves to cover it.
The vote was taken at a special meeting of the school board.
